9 Building Names
Following a formal request that the Town Council be consulted before the naming of building conversions such as Charter House, Wellington Street the following response was received from the District Street Naming and Numbering Department.
“The District Council has no jurisdiction over building names but can only guide developers towards choosing the name the Council would prefer.  There is no legal or constitutional mechanism for dealing with disputed building names, so the Council would have to agree to what the developer wanted if they were opposed to the Council’s suggestion.
The Town Council would need to consider a building name at the time of the planning consultation, so that a name was ready for when the District is approached by the developer for addresses to meet the required deadline.”
The Town Clerk proposes that we follow this practice from now on, and notes that the same principle could be applied to site names.
