Statement from The Spread Eagle
Please read the statement released by the Spread Eagle regarding the recently damaged sign:
‘As many of you are likely aware by now, an unfortunate incident occurred involving an articulated lorry and our historic listed sign outside the hotel. We are incredibly saddened by the damage to this local landmark, and we want to share an update on where things stand.
The Challenge Ahead
While we wish we could fix this overnight, the process is a bit more complex than it was a century ago. Back in 1926, five burly men with a “can-do” attitude were all it took to hoist the Spread Eagle sign into place. Fast forward 100 years, and things have changed. Because the sign is part of a listed building, we are working closely with various specialist companies and English Heritage to ensure the restoration is handled with the care it deserves. On this occasion, “a man with a van” simply won’t cut it. We require:
Specialist Equipment: To safely dismantle and remove the heavy structure.
Expert Craftsmanship: To painstakingly repair the historic metalwork and signage
Regulatory Coordination: To ensure every step meets heritage standards.
