Jean-Francois Bel, former Mayor of Montesson, has died

The former mayor (LR) of Montesson (Thame’s twin town in France) died on Tuesday after a long illness; he was 78. He had retired in 2020, saying he had reached retirement age. Jean-François Bel led the city for 25 years and also held the position of vice-president of the Yvelines General Council in charge of the environment. At the end of 90’s Thame was looking for a new twin town as the previous one was considered too long a journey. Montesson is on the edge of Paris and very easy to get to and when Jean-Francois met Cllr Don Butler the two immediately clicked and twinning was up and running! Both mayors had a wicked sense of humour which was helped greatly by the fact Jean-Francois spoke English, as he was born in Australia, his father being involved in the wool industry. Montesson Square was officially named by Jean-Francois who made a typical comment questioning why it was a square when it only had three sides! The Town Council will arrange for French flag will be flown at half mast outside the Town Hall as a mark of respect.
